On Friday 1 July 2016, at 18:00 local time, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hit Brinland with an epicenter close to Badoum, Bronze Province. The area struck by the earthquake includes some of the poorest and most food insecure areas of the country. Access to the region is difficult because of its mountainous terrain. The provinces of Bronze and Amethyst appear to be worst hit, with limited damage in the rest of the country.

According to the Government, the earthquake has affected around 3 million people of which more than 2 million are estimated to be in need of food assistance. Following the earthquake, Brinland’s President appealed for international assistance.

OCHA estimates that at least 800,000 people have been displaced. Media report an initial death toll of approximately 11,000 people.
