Tukastan earthquake

In response to the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake on 12 September and the powerful 6.6 aftershock on 16 September in the Democratic Republic of Tukastan, the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) was activated and deployed a team to support humanitarian operations in the hardest-hit areas.
Telecommunication infrastructure has been severely impacted. Telephone lines and electricity networks were disrupted, and mobile connectivity and Very High Frequency (VHF) systems are unreliable in the affected zones.
The ETC, in coordination with partners from Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), Emergency.lu, and Ericsson Response, established essential internet connectivity at humanitarian hubs using satellite technology—ensuring responders stay connected.
The ETC established the VHF network in Taldad, Akbad, and Qazurum, significantly improving secure communications for humanitarian responders, enabling coordination, safety, and life-saving response across affected regions around the affected area.
The ETC supported non-governmental organisations in conducting national exams for the local affected population in Taldad and Akbad, giving students a chance to stay connected to their education—no matter the challenges around them.
The Cluster installed a tent in the Taldad, Akbad, and Qazurum locations, establishing the reception area and setting up the ETC_messaging_only Wi-Fi network, which the affected population can use to stay in contact with their families.
